Privacy Notice

Maths Investigations is published and maintained by me(!), Rob Porteous, a full time primary teacher Maths specialist living and working in Edinburgh. Through the Maths Investigations web site, I provide both printable and online Maths resources for use by parents or teachers with children aged 6-13.

If you buy or use my products or services, I will hold personal information about you such as your name, email address and which product you bought or are using. In the terms of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) my use of your data is based on Legitimate Interests. This means that my use of your data should be in line with your reasonable expectations, so there is no need to ask your specific consent for anything.

This privacy notice explains what information I hold, what I do with it, and how long I keep it. All information is kept in secure servers by my UK-based web hosting service. I also hold an offline backup of the database which is stored securely in a separate location.

If you buy a downloadable product

Purchases are carried out through a secure merchant (currently Paypal) who will store information about the transaction. I will also store in my records your name, address, email address, the item you bought, what it cost and the date of the transaction. I keep this information so that I have information about the sale if you need to contact me about the product. This record is kept for up to six years and then deleted. I do not share this information with anyone or use it for any other purpose.

If you sign up for a trial of the web-based resources

Through the website you can register for a free trial of the tablet activities. When you register you will be asked for your first name, email address and your own choice of temporary login. The registration system automatically creates a secure password which is emailed to you. I hold this information so that you can use your username and password to log in and so that I can contact you to ask how your trial is progressing. This record is kept for the period of the trial and then deleted when you no longer need it. I do not share this information with anyone or use it for any other purpose.

If you register and pay to use any of the web-based resources

Through the website you can sign up to use the tablet activities and/or the printable activities. Depending on whether you are purchasing as an individual or for a school, you may either be asked to sign up for an annually recurring subscription using a secure merchant (currently Paypal) or you may receive an online invoice which you can print for your records while you arrange payment by purchase order. I will store in my records your name, address, email address, contact phone number and, in the case of school subscriptions, the name of the school. I also record what kind of subscription you have purchased and the date of the transaction. I hold this information so that you can use your username and password to login in and so that I can contact you if necessary about your account. This record is kept for a period of up to six years following your last use of the website and then deleted. I do not share this information with anyone or use it for any other purpose.

If you set up individual user accounts for other adults or children

If you register to use the online activities, you have the facility as administrator to set up individual logins for other children in your family or school. Additional teacher or parent logins can also then be used to add modify or remove child logins within the same family or school account. For the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), the teacher or school administrator is therefore the Data Controller. You should, therefore, use strong passwords and take appropriate precautions (such as logging out when you have finished using your account) to ensure that all data is kept secure. For individual child accounts I recommend that you use first name and first letter of surname only so that children's identity is protected.

When a child uses the online activities, the Maths Investigations database will store information such as activities completed and characters collected so that this can be displayed for the child to see and also so that teachers and parents can see children's progress. Children's names (first name and first letter of surname only) are also displayed publicly on some of the pages for a short period of time so that successes can be celebrated. If a child login is deleted by a parent, teacher or school administrator, the child's name and school details are removed from the record but the record is kept in an archive linked to the user login is case you delete a login accidentally and need it reinstated. Archived progress records are periodically deleted during my database clean-up. I do not share user progress information with anyone or use it for any other purpose.

Use of cookies

A cookie is an electronic means of recording on your own computer information about web pages you have visited. I do not use cookies on the Maths Investigations web site.

If you use the web site, information about the pages you visit is temporarily stored in session variables on my server so that the system remembers which activity you are using and which page you are on. The session variables are deleted if you are inactive on the site for a while. This means that if you are using the web site and leave it for half an hour or so, you are likely to be logged out and will need to log in again. Some of the information recorded in session variables (eg the last page you visited in an activity) is also recorded in the Maths Investigations database so that (eg) if you leave the site when you are in the middle of an activity it will take you back to the same page when you return to it.

When you can expect communication from me

I may use the contact details you have provided to contact you for any of the following reasons:

I do not routinely contact current or former customers about other products and services. If you want to see what's new you will need to keep an eye on the web site!

If you have a complaint

If you have a complaint about any aspect of the service I provide, please email me directly and I will attend to it.

As a consumer, if you are unhappy with the way any company is using your data, you also have a right to complain to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO).
