The Activities

To be confident with Maths, children need regular practice of core number skills, they need to understand what they are doing, and they need to be free to explore and investigate to see 'what happens if'.

Maths Investigations does all of this and more, through a combination of both photocopiable and online activities. For photocopiable, scroll down the page. For online, read on.

Online Activities

The online activities are designed for an interactive board or tablet. They also work well on any laptop or desktop computer, Mac or PC.

The children absolutely love them, and are particularly engaged by the cute animals that you can collect as you work through the investigations and quizzes!

The focus of the online materials is very much on core number skills: counting, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals & percentages and measurement. You have a choice of eight different areas as follows:

The Skill Checks and Pair Games help consolidate key number skills. Both let you make up and complete your own questions on a wide range of topics, so each child can set their own level of challenge and you can have everyone in a class or group working on the same area but with differentiated questions. The Skill Checks are for class teaching or for children working alone. The Pair Games allow them to challenge each other.

The Pattern Builders allow children and teacher together to investigate number patterns and to learn from mistakes, making up simpler examples and then building up step by step to more challenging ones. The use of these is best modelled initially with the whole class. Some pupils may then choose to access and play with them independently.

The guided Investigations are designed to let pupils explore and learn key Mathematical ideas (such as what happens when you multiply by 10, or how you find a percentage of something) at their own pace. You will probably want to introduce each activity to the whole class together and then allow pupils to work in teams or pairs, stopping every so often to share learning.

Many of the investigations have linked Quizzes which can be completed by individual pupils following an investigation, to confirm understanding. Quizzes can also be taken independently by a pupil at any point for self-assessment or can be set up by the teacher for a group or whole class to complete.

The Learning Ladder gives access to the full range of online activities, grouped by topic.

If you have signed up for individual accounts there are two further areas which become accessible:

Our Activities is where pupils can go to find investigations and quizzes that you (their teacher) have set up for them. The investigations can be self-assessed (traffic lighted) by pupils when finished. You can view the marks in your class marksheet and see which quiz questions individual pupils have got right or wrong.

My Scores shows pupils an individual record of all the activities they have undertaken and the points they have earned. The star system encourages pupils to come back and take a quiz several times after suitable intervals to encourage transfer from short-term to long-term memory.

"I like the way that you input numbers on the iPad. On the iPads it's easier to use because the keypad is not like a pop up one because it is like built in." (Hope - age 11)

Photocopiable Activities

"The children in my set need this type of activity as they can work through a set of text book questions so quickly, and these don't offer the challenge they need." (Year 5 co-ordinator, Woodnewton School)

In addition to number skills, the Photocopiable Investigations also cover aspects of Shape, Measure and Time. Some, such as Perimeter and Area of Triangles & Quadrilaterals, explore one particular area of Maths in depth. Others, such as Train Journey, are built around real-life scenarios, and are aimed at helping children to apply a range of Mathematical skills in different contexts.

The Investigations each come with their own (very!) comprehensive teacher’s notes.

There are also Photocopiable Games for teaching and consolidating key skills (like multiplication tables or telling the time).

Some can be done with a whole class together. Others you can teach to the class and then children can work on them individually at their own level, either in school or at home.

In addition to the teacher's notes, some of the games also have notes for parents which you can print and send home with your pupils - Get the mums and dads investigating too...
